Religion and Rigor

Posted in thought by nakedpastor on the June 12th, 2006

… people who are open spiritually are open to being manipulated more easily, are very vulnerable. The religious instinct is a very pure one in my opinion. But unless it’s met with a lot of rigor, it’s very hard to control” (Bono, in Bono in Conversation with Michka Assayas, p. 221).

May I suggest what might be meant by “rigor”? In my case: critical self-awareness; critical search for the revelation of God (truth); and these two tested against how well I love others unconditionally. Am I free? Do I free others? Or am I manipulated and manipulate others?

Wow. This Bono quote REALLY spoke to me. My vulnerability comes from my spiritual openness. So simple but so huge.

This oddly makes me feel a lot better about myself, (if I may be so self-revelatory), and much more conscious of being much more careful of what I let me see and do. In other words, exercising rigour in my spiritual life, which for me looks more like turning to God every time I feel needy and weak, which is every single day.

    Or 1. depart from evil
    2. do good
    3. and we won’t regret it.

It’s all connected. Who was it who said those wise words again? Oh yeah…..Dave! Thanks, man.
