Jesus, the church, the circus, and monkeys

jesus church circus monkey cartoon by nakedpastor david hayward

(*** UPDATE: Okay! I love this when my readers suggest a better version and I agree with them and we collaboratively create a better cartoon! I originally had Jesus saying, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” But I think this is better, “Not my circus, but they are my monkeys!” It’s based on an old Polish proverb. Thanks guys! This happened yesterday as well with my icon drawing of Christ, “Neither”, where I made the orb trinitarian rather than binary.)

“Not my circus, not my monkeys.” An old proverb.

Now, I believe in the oneness of all things. So I am connected, I know, to everyone, including those I profoundly disagree with. Even those I critique, I am one with. Which is exactly why I critique.

So, even though I don’t think the Jesus of the gospels would be impressed with the state of the church today, neither do I think he would have believed it is separate from him.

Therefore, on a deeper philosophically Christological level, we are his circus and we are his monkeys.

Want to come join our circus at The Lasting Supper? You don’t even have to run away from home! We’re a great bunch of monkeys.

    @ David,

I have no idea what “the oneness of all things” means, but I once thought I did. I used it as a transition mantra as I left the world of god-talk. But now, in my new foolishness, I use the mantra “the variety of all things”.

I also think “the Jesus of the gospels” is a favorite mantra of those who want to use Jesus to support their views. Instead, I see lots of Jesues’ — ALL being used.

That all said, I made a diagram today, illustrating how we all respond to opinions:

And of our options, I take the top option most often. So I think I am using your model / your language accurately when I proclaim, “I am indeed a Monkey!”

I’m just a hairless monkey treading water for a bit in the flow of time.

Sabio, from your diagram, I’m a fool. Even the bible says so. 😉

ROFL…. what a great saying! And all the signs on the churches just tickled me this morning! Loved this one!

I like them both but the more I think about it I also really like the orignal version, because many are not Jesus’ monkeys, but rather the monkeys of his biographers (I.e. John) or his early followers (I.e., Paul) or his recent followers (I.e., Billy Graham)…
