Sheep Week: Satan, Devils and Little Lambs

wolves are alive and well cartoon by nakedpastor david hayward

When I was a teenager my pastor was totally into Hal Lindsay’s “Satan is Alive and Well on Planet Earth”. He claimed to be an exorcist and had recordings of the exorcisms he let me listen to. I participated in exorcisms. He did a conference on Satanism to teach people all about devils and Satan and all the dangers.

I also remember reading Andre Crouch’s autobiography, especially the part where he said he saw a little demon hiding behind something in his living room.

During my teens, devils and demons were everywhere. Satan ruled! I lived in absolute terror night and day.

And, as a result, I was very compliant and obedient.

I’m free of all that now. Here’s an example of how I’ve changed: on Monday I was video interviewed by a “Kickass Witch”. Watch it here.

We tell stories like this at The Lasting Supper. Come join us. There’s room at the table!

I remember those late ’60s-early ’70s days when dispensationalist apocalypticism was a big thing and the charismatic movement was also under full swing. I was a student at a Christian college. Some students believed there was a demon under every rock. Scary stuff. What’s even scarier, in hindsight, is that there were exorcism attempts upon fellow students — people whose personal problems were thought to be “demon-influenced” but who were actually no more neurotic than most of us. How incredibly stupid, not to mention dangerous. Finally, when the college administration found out what was going on, they put a stop to it, with the promise that if it continued there would be expulsions. They understood the seriousness of it.

Exorcism really only works when there is a herd of pigs near-by.

David, seems like we were in sync a bit this week. I was thinking about how a certain approach to ‘spiritual warfare’ re-paganizes Christianity. I wrote about it here if you or your community are interested. It seemed to resonate with a lot of people who’ve been through it as we have.

I realized the hell was a form of control at a very young age. I stopped believing in it and continue to try to be a good person simply because it is the right thing to do.
