What does God think about spanking?

I suppose it depends on what kind of god you believe in. Old Testament? New Testament? Progressive? American? Swiss?

It baffles me that we can be obsessed with obeying the mores of an ancient culture.

No, it doesn’t baffle me actually because I used to think that way.

I read this article by Matthew Paul Turner and it inspired this cartoon.

I grew up in a culture where spanking was normal. It seeped into the beginnings of our parenting, but it quickly faded when we realized there are more effective ways to parent.

The mores of an ancient culture… a culture in which it was okay to stone your child for gathering firewood on the sabbath; to stone your wife for adultery; to sacrifice your children to gods for the success of a battle or to get right with God or to atone for the sins of a nation.

We do the same when it comes to sexuality and gender and women and so many other issues.

So I think it’s fruitless to find out what the bible believes about spanking. I have no doubt the the jury will come out saying it’s for it!

God spanked his child, so of course we should spank ours.

I’m pretty sure that God ‘spanked’ God’s child in order that we didn’t have the same punishment. Not to mention God spanking Jesus was nothing whatsoever to do with discipline!

Whatsoever you do unto the lest of these, so shall you do unto God.

Spanking worked for me when I was a kid…it was the shortest route from my butt to understanding in my pea brain. Mom and teacher meant what they said and it only took one swat in front of the whole class. That long route from ears to brain just did not get the message across. In my 17 years of teaching I saw “them” take away all the normal ways of disciplining that work -harsh words, standing in the hall, writing sentences and yes, the paddle because “they” did not want to embarrass the child nor hurt their self-esteem. (Even though my school district, the principal could paddle) So what replaced it? Calling the police to arrest the child and take them away in handcuffs. Now you tell me what is worse for a child. Punishments a kid understands or punishments for adults?
And isn’t there a scripture in that mentions spanking?

I meant to sum up “And isn’t there a scripture in THE OT that mentions spanking? duh, gotta take more time to proof what I write!!!!!!

And I need to add—if parents don’t discipline a child – and that could meant spanking- then society will discipline them much harsher when they are adults. i.e. arrest, jail time, etc.
