Although some advances are being made in women’s equality, there is still a long way to go.

What inspired today’s cartoon though are the stories of my female friends, many of whom are members of The Lasting Supper. They experience discrimination because they are women. So many unbelievable stories, but also stories where they are rising up against it.

I’m especially thinking of my amazing friends who are being abused by men, Christian men, and live under the oppression of the patriarchy.

It’s not just the individual man, but the milieu which creates, sustains and perpetuates them.

Not everybody sees it. Do you? Please do.

Women being discriminated against because of patriarchy. It suggests that safe men can have powerful influence in provision of safely and security to help free women to heal and to offer healthy community.

A challenging and difficult task for everyone which inevitably requires courage, sacrifice and risk in demolishing arguments and forces that are so ingrained in culture as to perpetuate abuse for selfish gain.

What are the best things that men can do to serve women to activity fight this evil?

The thing that immediately comes to my mind is an example of men in the 70’s actively campaigning against discrimination by protesting in marches for equal pay.

With my friend that suffered marital abuse I found that what she needed was just for me to be there with whatever she was going through. Not to fix but to be an enabler and empowered for her to do what she needed to do.
