Can we Stop the Abuse of Authority?

Clearly something is wrong.

We can no longer say, “Don’t generalize!” when lives are being ruined or taken.

Yes, there are good police. But the idea is rapidly rising that there is something wrong with police culture.

I can’t help but draw parallels to the church. Yes there are good pastors and good churches. But the idea is rapidly rising that there is something wrong with church culture.

It has something to do with authority and those who possess it.

We are seeing the fruit of a diseased root. Hard questions need to be asked and answered.

Are there good cops? I don’t know about that. I don’t see good cops trying to get bad cops out of the system. I don’t see good cops speaking out about the abuse. So maybe there are no good cops. Only bad cops and not as bad cops.

Are there good pastors, good churches? Yes. But the criteria is somewhat different. Still, I do see good churches help those who have been abused by bad churches, and people work to point out spiritual abuse.

    Thanks for the thought.

  2. Thanks Raymond. Good thoughts. But I wonder if the same thing can’t be applied to churches as to the police culture. Are there enough people raising the questions! Usually they are people like me who are considered outside the system.

I suppose it’s possible. But the police have jurisdiction over a region. Bad cops allowed in a region are going to be unavoidable.

But I can move from a toxic church to a better church. Can’t remove the toxic people, but can possibly remove myself from their authority. Can’t do that with the police.

The message that we need to stop abusing authority is a good one. There’s a lot we need to think about.

    Greetings, David:

Since discovering your wonderful little website, I’ve been trying to recall whether we met a few years back. By few, I mean 46-48 years ago. Maybe you landed there more recently. I currently reside in Cleveland, OH, but still have cousins in Quispamsis and I visit about once a year. Perhaps I can rattle your cage some time…

You are a talented man who loves deeply a church that has not always loved you in return. My heart goes out to you and many others for that. God bless you, my friend!

Like rtgmath [good to see you again!], I have definite ‘authority’ issues, particularly where the ‘boys in blue’ are concerned. I wanted to affirm what you have seen in ‘police culture.’

Perhaps like you, David, I tend to bring together stands of thought seldom found in one person. A practicing Christian, I am also a committed socialist. For some time now, the World Socialist Web Site [ wsws.org ] has been publishing on the subject of police violence and the judicial malfeasance which facilitates it. At one point, it was stated that in 2015, police killings were up by 7.9% over the previous year. Of course North of the parallel, you’ve had issues with this also.

At any rate, I wanted to alert you to the wsws.org website in the event that you wanted to pursue that particular issue further. I truly appreciate your courage to address this. If you wish, feel free to drop me a line sometime. Blessings!

  5. I’m 58 now. I don’t remember meeting.

Thanks for reference to the site. I’ll check it out.
