Build That Wall and Theology (can you find it?)

Can you find the one rebel in the mix? Sorry if I made you work for this one.

You see, I’ve always loved Ephesians 2:14…

“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility…”

Theology is useless to us unless it percolates down into policy. Like love! It’s a wonderful idea, but that’s all it is unless it is practiced, unless it finds its expression in the world.

Therefore, I’ve always believed our policies should begin with the idea that we are one with our neighbors. And this ought to put the question:

How can we be compassionate toward one another as equals while at the same time respecting our respective spaces?

  1. Oh bugger I misread that! Sorry! I thought you were asking how we could have such cognitive dissonance!

But simply put, we need to really grapple with the text and what it asks of us. Jewish law hinges not on worship of Gd but of doing justice first. Heck, the 3 things listed in Micah 6:8 aren’t arbitrarily put in the order we see it – “to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.” Christian social justice works in the same vein – it’s worthless to say you love Gd and Jesus and seek the presence of the Holy Spirit if you’re not bothering in the first place to make the world better.

  2. Thanks for this, it comes at an appropriate moment in my life.
I’ve just returned home to Taiwan after 6 months of sabbatical in North America.
I was contacted a while ago about preaching at an event hosted by the ecumenical work committee of a local presbytery of the Taiwan Presbyterian Church. Was wondering what to do.
Your cartoon gave me a text. I’m building on it.
