That Makes Us Refugees, Right?

I know I’m going to get in trouble over this cartoon. But I had to make a statement, so I’m making it.

I’m rather alarmed at the negative kickback I’ve received over my other cartoons that claim the holy family were refugees.

We’re not talking about the lawful and required trip they had to make to Bethlehem to register for the consensus. We’re talking about their flight to Egypt. Hence, the pyramids.

I’m not sure why there’s so much resistance to identifying the holy family as refugees, but this cartoon is my guess.

In the end, though, even if the story is not historically true, there is plenty of biblical support for caring for people in trouble and in need.

But, more than that, we shouldn’t need biblical support to be kind to desperate people fleeing persecution and a sad life to find a happier one as our neighbors.

If our default position is love rather than fear, then their pleas for our help would not be expressed in vain.

  1. Thank you for that line, “If our default position is love rather than fear…” That is the greatest lesson and the starkest choice my Christ offers, and you’ve worded it beautifully.
