Once in a while I hear an inspiring story about some small good developments in Port au Prince, Haiti. But most of the articles I'm reading about Haiti are sad and frustrating. Like this one from the Canadian Globe and Mail. When I was there a couple of months ago, I was absolutely overwhelmed with the devastation, the complexity of the problem and the seeming impossibility of any solution. And the hurricanes and rains are just on the horizon! It angered me while I was there that there was so much aide immediately available but totally inaccessible to the suffering Haitians. We were in one orphanage where the kids hadn't eaten that day. It took us to go get the beans and rice at a little corner store to get them fed. While apparently there were pallets of food sitting in storage held up in Customs. There is also something like 12 billion dollars waiting to be used to rebuild Port au Prince. Food and money and other aide such as medicine are all within reach. But it might as well be a thousand miles away. And in a sense it is. For the relief seems to have come down to the will of the decision makers in high places.
