When I was a pastor, some people actually told me, in so many words:
"Listen, we pay you to tell us what to believe and how to live. Do your job!"
I do believe in mentoring, guidance, and spiritual direction.
But, I also believe in spiritual independence.
I believe the best spiritual direction is not telling people what to believe or how to live, but helping them figure it out for themselves.
It's like a good school: it shouldn't tell our children what to know, but train them how to study for themselves.
