The philosopher Hegel believed that institutions are something from which the Spirit has flown, and that they use free people as cogs in their machines.
I believe the continuous struggle is for the perpetual liberating of free people from institutions that would enslave them and eventually kill their spirit.
This isn't to say we can't belong to groups or institutions. As long as they are responsive to the prophetic call for the freedom of all people.
