Make Yourself the Black Sheep!

"Make Yourself the Black Sheep" cartoon by nakedpastor David Hayward

"Make Yourself the Black Sheep!"

As soon as you break away from the flock to become independent, you’ve made yourself the black sheep.

The term originated from the odd black sheep that are born into a flock of white sheep. Black wool was undesirable because it could not be dyed.

So, because their black wool wasn’t valued as much as white wool, the sheep weren’t valued as much either.

There are so many applications in this for us today.

There are some people and communities that will value us more highly if we conform to their standards of what is worthy. We will be included if we are the same, not different. We are valued only if we measure up. Our worth is measured by our ability to blend in.

But if we have different qualities that go against the community's standards, then we won’t be valued as much.

We become the black sheep.

And, if we are courageous enough to display these divergent qualities, we make ourselves the black sheep!

I admire people who are willing to put their community membership on the line to be true to themselves and true to their pursuit of the truth.

Are you a black sheep?

Or on your way to being one?
