Like a white person who claims racism doesn't exist in America. I know sexism exists because I detect it in my own heart. I know what privilege means because I have it. Recently I was talking with a friend of mine who is a lesbian, and she said that sometimes she can see it in what I write... something that is unsettling to her about my white male privilege addressing these issues. She's glad I'm an advocate, but there's no way I can understand discrimination the way she does. She's right! I'm not a woman either. So, I recognize that I can only go so far in my understanding. My advocacy is limited. Women know far better than men the kind of daily discrimination that is not only occasionally expressed, but is deeply embedded in our cultural milieu in a way that infects all our transactions. M. L. King Jr. raised our awareness of racism and inaugurated change for his people. Gandhi helped raised our awareness of colonialism and inaugurated change for his people. Nelson Mandela raised our awareness of apartheid and inaugurated change for his people. It is women who raise our awareness of sexism and inaugurate change for women.
