On Being Civil
I claim the only time sheep should be used as a metaphor for people is when we are...
1. hopelessly lost;
2. exceptionally weak; or
3. victimized by those with more power.
Never should we become sheep simply because the aggressor demands or even requests it. This plays right into their hands because it gives them more power to inflict their agenda on us and others.
This certainly is true in church contexts. This is why I think the sheep metaphor is so highly favored among church leaders.
It is also certainly true in the political sphere. Even the word "civilian" implies always being civil.
But, I've seen sheep turn into lions. And I've seen civilians practice civil disobedience.
No! Don't be civil for their sakes.
