prayer from the cell: nothing to say
I have a very good book that I've read a couple of times called Listening to the God Who Speaks: Reflections on God's Guidance from Scripture and the Lives of God's People, by theologian Klaus Bockmühl. I agree with the general thrust of his book. But if I have a book that is called The God Who Is Silent, I would also agree with that. I had spent years in religious traditions such as Charismatic, Pentecostal and Vineyard that strongly believe God is speaking all the time, which is why prophecy is such a prevalent activity among these groups. Sometimes it was so over-active that I wondered if there should be a book, The God Who Never Shuts Up! There is nothing wrong with silence. I have experienced long episodes of it. In fact, that seems to be the norm for me now. But this silence is not empty. This silence does not mean rejection or alienation or divorce to me. The silence is full. It is full of Beauty, Presence and Benediction. Yes, bene (good) diction (speech). But it is a speech that is silent which percolates down into the deepest regions of my mind and delivers peace and the sense of being loved. Get fine art prints of my cartoons. Get my fine art.
