Description: In the first frame, God is saying to Satan as the Church looks on, "I call you 'Satan' because you are the adversary of my people and accuse them before me day and night!" In the next frame the Church says, "Hey wait a minute I thought that was my job!!"

SATAN MEANS ADVERSARY AND ACCUSER

When I learned as a teenager that "Satan" means adversary and accuser, it made sense to me.

I also remember reading C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" as a teenager and being impressed by the fact that demons really are on what they think is a superior mission to God's. They really think they're doing the right thing.

Even though we may not believe in a literal Satan or devils, we may believe that we sometimes face adversity that feels demonic in proportion and accusations that hurt like Hell.

It's tragically sad that for so many of us it's the Church that has been our greatest adversary and meanest accuser.

And it's especially devilish that the Church can believe it's on a superior mission while it is an adversary and accuser of so many people.
