When They Just Quote Scripture
Description: A woman is on her cell phone. Jesus says, “Don’t you hate it when they just quote scripture? It reminds me of Satan harassing me in the desert!”
WHEN THEY JUST QUOTE SCRIPTURE
Don’t you just hate it when people just quote scripture at you in response to something you said or did?
Almost always when someone quotes scripture at me they have a fundamentalist streak.
It means they assume a few things:
They think you don’t know the Bible at all.
They believe they know the Bible better than you.
They think it helps if you hear it in THEIR voice or THEIR font.
They assume when they quote scripture they’re right.
They believe hearing scripture will actually change your mind.
They think you care what they have to say… which is what they think the Bible actually has to say.
I find it very interesting that in the gospels the most famous one for quoting Scripture is Satan.
When Jesus referred to Scripture it was to transform its accepted traditional interpretation.
In fact, he even undermined anyone’s obsession with the Bible when he said, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.” Implying, “Wrong!”
We can safely assume that just because you can quote the Bible means absolutely nothing.
So do what I do:
When people quote scripture at you just scroll on by and say, “Get behind me Satan!”
