when you just can't do church anymore
"Can't Do Church Anymore" cartoon by nakedpastor David Hayward
Here's my theory on why so many people are leaving the church: it's not the order of service, the liturgy, the music, the methods, or the style. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!
No, it's not about the style!
Oh, it may be for some. This is why churches will continue to tweak their style because it does matter to some. But it doesn't matter to most.
What matters to most? I think it's the severe restriction on freedom of thought. Essentially, theology has not changed since it was born. We are not allowed, for the most part, to explore new intellectual frontiers.
It's gone stale. The church is stalemated.
This is why I eventually left. After serving the church for over 30 years, I left not because of its style. I left because I couldn't continue my intellectual, theological, philosophical journey and stay. You can read about it in my new book Questions Are The Answer: nakedpastor and the search for understanding
As the cartoon suggests, this is not only true for members but clergy as well.
Many of you know what I'm talking about. Don't you!? Then come join us at The Lasting Supper
. The intellectual frontier there is wide open territory.
