A google translate box. On the “Christianese” side it says, “Christ has set you free!” and on the translation side it says, “You’re free to do what we tell you!”
YOUR FREEDOM IS SCARING THEM
Your freedom offends people. It’s because you’re breaking their rules and offending their sensitivities.
But your freedom also scares them. It’s because free people are uncontrollable.
When we read through the different gospel writers and sift through their differing stories, we can still get a glimpse of a man they called Jesus who was remarkably free.
Yes, he offended people by breaking their rules and provoking their sensitivities… things like hanging out with sinners and treating Sunday just like any other day.
But he was also uncontrollable. There was nothing they could do but kill him.
What I most love about the stories of Jesus is how he respected the freedom of others. We don’t see a clingy neediness or arrogant control imposed on others. People were free to come and go, hang out or no. He observed how free people act: the woman searching for the lost coin; the shepherd leaving the 99 for the one; the prodigal son; the woman caught in adultery; the woman at the well; the healed man he told to go home to his friends instead of following him; his friend who betrayed him, and so on.
It seems to me that all people needed was just one encounter with a completely free man to be affirmed in their own freedom and to go live their lives completely liberated.
The church can’t handle this because it thinks it loses its purpose which is to manage people.
You are free.
So be free!
