I worked on this drawing, sketch, for hours on Sunday. It is pen and ink and graphite pencil on Strathmore acid-free watercolor paper, measuring 8″x10″ (20cm x 25cm). The same girl as in the bear drawing emerges from the depths of my unconscious again. This time, like Moses, she holds up the staff. But she does so to stop a stampeding herd of elephants. I know there are times when we are up against what seem to be insurmountable odds. There is a promise that we may prevail. But it is not by might. Not by power. But by the Spirit. That’s what I’m counting on during these days of gigantic and intimidating uncertainties. I’m calling her Sophia.
