Hey, I’m David.
I’m a pastor turned artist painting, drawing, and thinking about what it takes to be free to be you. If you’re interested in deconstruction, spiritual journeying, freedom of thought, or looking for your authentic self, you’re welcome to join me while I search too.
In case you’re wondering, I’m not actually naked. The idea behind my name, NakedPastor, is to seek to tell the naked truth - no matter how vulnerable it feels. I used to be a pastor but I’ve been creating art and working towards freedom with this community for over 10 years now.
The best way to get to know me is through my art. Here’s a quick rundown.
My cartoons are what I’m most known for. I love that they’re powerful and effective. They speak louder than words and go straight to the heart. There's no time to scramble for an argument. It's too late. You can't unsee them.
Through cartoons, I challenge problematic norms in religious spaces and life in general. Basically, they’re more than just cartoons. They inspire, provoke, and start difficult conversations. They don’t just sit on your walls; one frame at a time, they’re making a difference. Here’s a video explaining why I love drawing cartoons.
Drawings & Watercolors
Some people find it hard to believe that the person who draws the controversial NakedPastor cartoons is the same person who creates these contemplative paintings and charcoal drawings. But they are all an expression of my passion for personal freedom... mine and yours! My paintings depict what freedom looks and feels like to me. It’s spacious but not empty. Solitude but not lonely. One but one with all things.
My surroundings in Canada have helped me learn mindfulness, inner peace, and becoming one with nature and the world around me. I want these artworks to help you by showing the beautiful solitude you’ll find on the journey towards personal freedom.
If you’re still reading and want to know more about me and my background, here’s a bit about the origins of NakedPastor, and me of course.
When I started NakedPastor it was a novelty but has since grown into a diverse global community of independent thinkers who support each other on their journey to personal spiritual freedom. Committed to truth, authenticity, and understanding, I support LGBTQ+ people and groups, BIPOC and women artists, creatives, journalists (and more), and encourage you to do the same.
In 2010, after 30 years as a pastor, I left the ministry to focus on NakedPastor and the community that was emerging around it. It’s now my full-time gig! With a Masters in Theological Studies, as well as Diplomas in Religious Studies and Ministry, and University Teaching, I’m no stranger to belief systems.
Beyond my art, I’ve also written 9 books and I post a few times a month on my blog. However, the part of the NakedPastor brand which I’m most proud of is its thriving community which you can read more about here.
I don’t just make art, I also talk (a lot). If you’re interested in hearing my ideas about deconstruction, spirituality, and freedom, you might enjoy my newsletter which you can sign up for here.
