Beloved Arise: A Cartoon That Saved a Life

I drew this cartoon as a commission project with Beloved Arise, a movement dedicated to LGBTQIA+ youth of faith. They build relationships, offer support, and inspire youth to embrace life to the fullest.

I titled this cartoon  "Beloved Arise'

beloved arise cartoon by nakedpastor david hayward

Jesus lays his hand on the head of a small girl who is lying in bed with her eyes closed and covered in an LGBTQ rainbow blanket, and Jesus says, "Beloved arise!"

This is based on the gospel story of Jesus raising the girl from the dead.

Yesterday, I received a message from Ashley about this drawing:

"Your cartoon for Beloved Arise in December literally changed the trajectory of our lives. My 13 year old Alex was in the hospital after a suicide attempt when I saw your post. I'm not sure my youngest kiddo would be alive today if you hadn't led us to Beloved Arise. Thanks for the work you do! It matters!"

And this folks is why I do what I do.

When we stand up for justice for everyone we actually save lives!

This print speaks to me so much as the story of Jairus Daughter had been relayed to me when I was going through childhood cancer at age 12.

I didn’t fully accept myself as a queer human of faith until I was 30 years old.

Thank you for your work intersecting full humanity with spirituality.

This image and story brought tears to my eyes. I pray this message reaches many of God’s beautiful children in the LGBTQ community.
