Saint Brendan took great risks to find his true home. Does this sound like you?

The story of Brendan intrigues me because of his courage. He set sail looking for Paradise and he found it. This drawing shows the dangers of his journey, both seen and unseen. The moon signifies that we often have so little if any light to guide us. The elements suggest that this is not going to be easy or comfortable. The seagulls suggest that perhaps land is not too far off.

I drew this after reading Frederick Buechner’s novel Brendan. At the time it was only a sketch, but years later I found myself compelled to draw the completed picture.

This is for you if you have left the comfort and security of your established home, the belief systems you were raised on, the church you grew up in, your family, an unhappy marriage, you name it...

Hang this up as a reminder that the risks you are taking are worth it because they’ll lead you to your true home.
