Theology is useless to us unless it percolates down into policy. Like love! It's a wonderful idea, but that's all it is unless it is practiced, unless it finds its expression in the world.
Therefore, I've always believed our policies should begin with the idea that we are one with our neighbors. And this ought to put the question:
How can we be compassionate toward one another as equals while at the same time respecting our respective spaces?
