The Power of Negative Thinking

The Power of Negative Thinking

In Slavoj Žižek’s new book, "Like a Thief in Broad Daylight", he talks about not just the importance of thinking, but the danger of thinking.

He refers to the philosophers Heidegger and Sloterdijk:

“The evil and therefore most acute danger is thinking itself, insofar as it has to think against itself, yet can seldom do so” (p. 4).

In other words, the most acute danger is self-critical thinking. To not think seriously about our thinking is evil.

But Žižek pushes it further to claim that when we do think dangerously, from a conventional standpoint, THAT will appear as evil.

We see this in every field… from business to education to politics to religion, etcetera. Thinking negatively, self-critically, is dangerous and is usually not welcomed and is almost always not appreciated.

Prophets get stoned. Journalists get murdered.

Haven‚Äôt you experienced this? Haven‚Äôt you thought against the flow, voiced your opinion, and as a result suffered for it?

If you haven’t, I encourage you to start thinking dangerously.
