Been there.

I’ve been involved with churches that believed in, taught, and fought with the “Jezebel spirit”. I was sometimes the pastor.

Looking back now I realize, all too clearly, that the label “Jezebel” was used on any woman who was unmanageable.

Some women used the label. But mostly it was men that tossed it around.

The Jezebel spirit is a patriarchal term used to keep women under control.

If you haven’t been around this kind of culture, you wouldn’t believe how quickly this label can invoke fear in women, ostracize them, shame them, and get them to fall back in line and submit again.

No, we don’t throw them out of windows to their deaths to be eaten by dogs anymore.

But the spiritual and social death can be just as great.
